If you want to know the most trendy and exciting novelist in Japan, I strongly recommend you see "Kotaro Isaka". He is slightly like Haruki Murakami, but he is more entertained than Murakami.
Golden Slumber
In Japan, there are many movies which based on Isaka's novels, such as "Coin Locker for Duck and DUCK", "Fish Story", or "Golden Slumber".
According to the IMDb, "Golden Slumber" is:
When easy-going Aoyagi meets an old friend for a fishing trip, he ends up drugged, framed for the Prime Minister's assassination, and on the run from corrupt cops. It's only the beginning of what quickly becomes the worst, weirdest day of his life. But he'll get by with a little help from his friends, who include a famous pop diva, a rockabilly deliveryman, a crippled old gangster, and the world's most cheerful serial killer. Among the many puzzles of this twisty, clever film is how Nakamura manages to sneak a genuinely moving tribute to friendship into the madcap procession of perilous events. No matter what befalls Aoyagi, his friends and parents believe in him because of his steadfast, almost irrational pleasantness. Written by Los Angeles Film Festival
I think that the appropriate and exactly right description of his works is that there are "the many puzzles of the twisty" and finally just fit all pieces of riddle such as a jigsaw puzzle. We Japanese call it "Isaka World".
In addition, he never use similar plot. For instance, "Fish Story" from NYT is:
An unsuccessful punk band on the verge of breaking up records a song in 1975, one year before the debut of the Sex Pistols. The song isn't initially a hit, but somehow it manages to transcend normal space and time, affecting people across several time periods. Earth should be destroyed in 2012, but because of the effects of the song, fate can be delayed or even completely avoided. ~ Baseline StudioSystems
You can see their 3 movie trailers from the below YouTube, but unfortunately they are in Japanese without English subtitle.
The most favorite his novel for me is "Golden Slumber". I wasn't able to read it and to see its movie without tears. I love Beatles!
Really unfortunately there is no book of Isaka which is translated in English for now. However, you will read "Golden Slumber" in English on the next March. The English translated tittle is "Remote Control". First of all, you should read an product description from Amazon.com - below widget. I bet you become read and get it.
