I wonder how we Japanese should translate a Japanese word - "setsunai" into English. One dictionary says "setsunai" is "sad", another says "agonizing" or "painful". Maybe all of the words is near meaning, but is not exactly right meaning.
5 Centimeters Per Second
I think "setsunai" is a feeling like not only bitter-sweet and also hurting a heart with a pain, or feeling to be close to crying. In any case, it is so hard to explain the feeling of "setsunai".
If you want to deeply feel the "setsunai", I recommend you see anime movies that directed by "Makoto Shinkai".
He has directed 3 anime firms - "Voices of a Distant Star" and "The Place Promised in Our Early Days" and "5 Centimeters Per Second".
All his works can get by amazon.com. For instance, "5 Centimeters Per Second" is below widget.
You can get his official jpeg files and wallpapers from below websites.

I loved the imagery of this anime. The scenery is just so breathtaking, it pulls on your heart strings. The soundtrack just hits this anime out of the ballpark; it's just so perfect. This may be a good "gateway" anime for people unfamiliar with Japanese animation--the storyline highlights meaningful moments in an mundane life--you'll be relieved to discover that anime is not always a sensational onslaught of surreal sights and sounds that besiege the senses. Relish this drama-anime. This one is truly a gem.
Completely agree with you. This anime movie is the best gateway to know Japanese anime. Besides, "gem" is exactly suited explanation. Thank you for leading me to realize the fabulousness of this anime movie.
